Dear Sir/Madam

Following contact which I had with you over the showing of the “Jerry Springer Opera” on TV and the objections of many within the constituency of the Baptist Union of Scotland to that showing, I would be grateful if you could let me know what action you have taken following the airing of the programme.

The objections to the programme still stand.

As you will see from the enclosed copy of a letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, I have asked her to consider examining the way in which Ofcom is set up. Your confessed inability to engage in any pre-programme investigation of a substantial public protest was something which confused and perplexed many people. It seems a strange restriction to have had imposed on you as a public watchdog meant to keep some kind of check on the media.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Rev Bill Slack
General Director
Baptist Union of Scotland
