Missions Structure

Mission in the Baptist Union of Scotland

This is now spearheaded by our Mission Advisor, Rev Andy Scarcliffe. His key role is in the development of a Mission Resource Team, comprising up to ten Mission Networkers, which will equip and resource our churches to engage in relevant holistic mission.

He is committed to research, training and equipping the members of the team, and works with them in developing strategy, identifying new challenges and establishing new initiatives. Andy has oversight of the team and interacts with local church representatives in supporting and encouraging each of the Networkers.

Although having an office in Resource House, Andy is often out and about among the churches. His PA, Lesley Messer, runs Mission Support from the office and can provide information, advice and a range of resources for enquirers, as well as providing administrative assistance to Andy and the Mission Networkers.

Mission Networkers

These are appointed by, and are accountable to, the local churches within each area. They work part time, ranging from six to twelve days per month, and operate very much at grass roots level, partnering with local churches and leaders in resourcing, networking, research, training and new initiatives.

As each locality has it's own unique challenges and opportunities, so each Networker can adapt to the needs of an individual church, or group of churches, at local level. Your local Networker can help you in a variety of ways:

  • Encourage and initiate networks
  • Organise or facilitate training
  • Identify mission resources, and act as a mission resource themselves
  • Equip churches for involvement in the local community
  • Assist in demographic research of the community
  • Engage in consultation for mission with local churches
  • Assist in developing mission strategy - necessary for churches in receipt of a Ministry Resource Grant from the Baptist Union of Scotland
The Mission Resource Team (MisRT)

Comprising the Mission Advisor, all Mission Networkers in post, the Union's Young People's Advisor and the General Director (on an ex-officio basis). The team's aim is to support churches in mission. Some key priorities are:

  • Networking - we aim to encourage networking and partnership between churches for the sake of mission
  • Resourcing - we aim to keep abreast of new mission resources and make them available on loan
  • Training - we are able to provide training days for your church leadership team/congregation that can be tailor made to suit your context
  • Consultancy - we are able to provide a mission consultancy or community audit to help your church be more effective in mission
  • Research - we aim to keep up-to-date with current research, and to analyse the statistical return forms from our own churches
  • Urban expression - we are partnering with UE with the intention of planting new congregations in the most deprived areas of our cities
  • Church planting - we are committed to seeing the planting of new congregations / fresh expressions of church, and are willing to offer support and resources where possible
